SSEN Distribution will be undertaking a vital infrastructure upgrade at Chobham Substation starting this Winter. This work will see us upgrade two transformers that have served us for over 70 years but are now nearing the end of their operational lifespan. Reinforcing this part of the distribution network is part of our continued commitment to ensuring our communities have a reliable and resilient power supply.

How will this affect you?

Works throughout this project will be confined to Chobham Substation’s operational boundary. The substation access track, off of Gorse Lane, will provide a route into the substation throughout the project. Our specialist contractors have conducted surveys and created plans to ensure the delivery of the transformers is safe for the community and the workers delivering the project. We’ll do all we can to look after our neighbours, the environment and their properties during these works.

The nature of these works means there will be restricted access to the substation access track for a short period. We understand these works may cause some disruption, however using industry best practice, our contractors will do everything to limit any inconvenience to you.

Restrictions will be confined to the substation access road as below. Throughout works a route for pedestrians and the horse-riding community will be maintained.

Our sustainability commitments

We’re dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of what we do, and ensuring no net loss of biodiversity on our large projects. We completed an assessment to look at how the project would affect nearby trees and vegetation. Whilst we’ve been able to design the project around the existing trees, some limited vegetation clearance and branch removal will be needed.

To compensate for the loss of vegetation, and to achieve our goal of no-net loss of biodiversity, we’re committed to replanting in the area, and we’d welcome support from local schools, businesses, and organisations in this effort. If you know an organisation that would like to support us with this, please contact us at LCD@sse.com.

Community Engagement

We’re committed to engaging with the community in Chobham throughout the project. We encourage residents and stakeholders to stay informed about the project’s progress. To support this, we’re hosting a community drop-in event to discuss the project.
